DataCrunch weekly update
For those unfamiliar, DataCrunch is our weekly prediction contest ranking 3000 most liquid US equities for DataCrunch’s Hedge Fund.
With yearly rewards totaling 120,000 $USDC split across different prediction targets, this is one of our most competitive challenges.
1 Week Left For The Autoimmune Disease Machine Learning Crunch 2
Only one week remains for submissions to the Autoimmune Disease ML Challenge Crunch 2 with The Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center and The Klarman Cell Observatory.
In this challenge, you’ll predict the expression levels of 2,000 genes not measured in the spatial transcriptomics dataset, using both spatial data and single-cell RNA sequencing from similar colon tissue samples.
The final deadline is March 21st, 2025.
Remember, we allow ties when models achieve the same scores, meaning they receive the same rank.
Some of the rules for ties include:
- Models with identical scores receive the same rank (the first rank of the tie)
- Rewards are distributed equally among tied participants
- Example: If 1st-3rd are tied, all get 1st rank with rewards averaged

Jean’s Podcast with BlockFuel
Crunch founder, Jean Herelle recently sat down with BlockFuel to discuss how Crunch is powering algorithms for ADIA Lab, Broad Institute, and major banks.
The conversation covers Crunch’s journey from 14 people to a network of 7,000+ ML engineers, how we’re rewriting work itself through blockchain, and our approach to solving real-world problems.
Along with many other unheard stories, Jean also shared our “Ender’s Game” secret to tackling complex prediction challenges.

Sneak Peek for Le Quant Club Meetup in Bengaluru
For those who missed the Le Quant Club meetup in Bengaluru, our co-founder Peter Cotton shared his groundbreaking work on Schur Complementary Allocation.
This innovative approach bridges Markowitz optimization and hierarchical clustering for portfolio construction, preserving correlation information between clusters unlike standard Hierarchical Risk Parity.
Peter tested this method in the M6 Competition and placed 7th out of about 200 teams. If you want to explore it yourself, check out his “precise” Python package at github.com/microprediction/precise!

Join Peter at MAFN 2025 Conference
Mark your calendars! Our Co-founder Peter Cotton will be speaking at the Columbia MAFN 2025 Conference on the future of machine learning in finance.
- Date: Thursday, March 20th
- Time: 8:30AM - 6:00PM
- Location: Columbia University, NYC
He’ll be joining an impressive panel of experts including Atlas Wang (XTX Markets), Gordon Ritter (Ritter Alpha), Claudia Perlich (Two Sigma), and Erk Subasi (GAM Systematic).
That’s all for this week, Crunchers! Your collective intelligence is reshaping what’s possible in prediction. Thank you for being the driving force behind Crunch’s impact.
